Choosing in-home ABA services for your child is a big decision—and at The Nest, we want you to feel confident, informed, and supported every step of the way.
We often hear from families: “What will sessions look like?” or “How involved will I need to be?” That’s why we’re giving you a peek inside a typical day with The Nest, so you know what to expect when our team joins your family in your most important space: your home.
Step 1: Arrival and Connection
Every session begins with connection—our therapists don’t just walk through the door and start therapy. We take a few minutes to say hello, observe your child’s mood, and ease into the session. This builds trust and ensures we’re meeting your child where they are that day.
Friendly greeting and review of the plan
Light engagement (e.g., preferred toys or conversation)
Check-ins with parents (updates, questions, goals)
Step 2: Review of Goals and Data Collection
We use your child’s individualized behaviour plan, developed by a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) in collaboration with you. Each session focuses on priority goals in:
Communication (e.g., requesting items, using visuals)
Life skills (e.g., handwashing, putting on shoes)
Social interaction (e.g., turn-taking, greetings)
Play and leisure skills (e.g., learning to play with toys, engaging in various leisure activities)
Behaviour reduction (e.g., replacing unsafe behaviours with functional alternatives)
Our team collects data in real time using electronic or paper-based tools, so we can track progress and adjust teaching strategies as needed.
Step 3: Skill Building & Teaching Time
Using evidence-based ABA strategies like discrete trial teaching and natural environment teaching our team works on the skills identified in your child’s plan.
Each activity is:
Individualized: Aligned with your child’s learning style
Reinforcing: Paired with meaningful rewards and praise
Flexible: Adjusted in real time based on energy levels or responsiveness
You might see us teaching during:
A meal or snack (self-help skills)
Playtime (social or language goals)
A walk around the block (community safety)
A chore (daily living routines)
Step 4: Parent Involvement & Coaching (Optional but Encouraged)
We believe that parents are the most important teachers in a child’s life. That’s why we offer ongoing parent coaching, which can be integrated into sessions or booked separately.
During sessions, we can:
Model strategies in real time
Explain behaviour principles and teaching methods
Troubleshoot barriers (e.g., transitions, meltdowns)
Share visuals or tools to help at home
We’re not here to judge—we’re here to partner with you.
Step 5: Wrap-Up and Feedback
As the session ends, we spend a few minutes reviewing:
What went well
What was interfering
Next steps for future sessions
Reminders or tips for the day
We believe in transparent communication, so you’re always informed and included.
