Why Are BCBAs Now Registered Behaviour Analysts (RBAs) in Ontario?
If you've been searching for autism or ABA services in Ontario, you may have noticed something confusing. Some professionals introduce themselves as Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), while others use the title Registered Behaviour Analyst (RBA).
So, which one is correct? The answer is: both - but they represent different things.
Let's break down what changed in Ontario, what it means for families, and why it's actually a positive step for protecting the public.

A New Era for Behaviour Analysis in Ontario
For many years, behaviour analysts in Ontario typically held the BCBA® (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) credential through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB), an international certification organization.
However, Ontario has officially regulated the profession of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). Since July 1, 2024, the title "Behaviour Analyst" has been legally protected under Ontario's Psychology and Applied Behaviour Analysis Act, 2021. Only individuals who are registered with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO) may use that title while providing ABA services in Ontario. (CPBAO) This means that Behaviour Analysts in Ontario are now regulated healthcare professionals, similar to psychologists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and physiotherapists.
What Is an RBA?
RBA stands for Registered Behaviour Analyst.
An RBA is a Behaviour Analyst who is registered with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO), the regulatory body responsible for overseeing the profession in Ontario.
Registration means that the clinician must:
Meet Ontario's registration requirements
Follow provincial standards of practice
Adhere to a professional code of ethics
Complete ongoing professional development
Maintain professional accountability
Be subject to complaints, investigations, and discipline if professional standards are not met
This level of regulation helps protect families and ensures Behaviour Analysts are practicing safely, ethically, and competently. (CPBAO)
Does This Mean the BCBA Credential Is Gone?
Not exactly.
The BCBA is still an internationally recognized certification. Many Behaviour Analysts in Ontario—including our Clinical Director—earned this credential before provincial regulation.
In fact, many Ontario clinicians will continue to list both credentials, for example:
Jane Smith, M.Ed., BCBA, RBA (Ont.)
The BCBA reflects international certification and training, while the RBA reflects legal registration to practise as a Behaviour Analyst in Ontario.
As of July 1, 2026, Ontario's transitional registration pathways have closed, and new Behaviour Analysts in Ontario now register through CPBAO's provincial pathways rather than the previous transitional routes. (CPBAO)
Why Is Regulation Good for Families?
Regulation provides important protections that previously did not exist.
When you work with an RBA, you know your clinician is accountable to a provincial regulatory college whose primary responsibility is protecting the public.
This means families have confidence that their Behaviour Analyst:
Has met established educational and competency requirements
Is required to practise ethically
Must maintain professional standards
Can be held accountable if those standards are not met
Ultimately, regulation increases transparency, consistency, and trust within the profession.
How Does This Affect ABA Services?
For most families, very little changes in day-to-day services.
You can still expect:
Individualized assessment
Evidence-based treatment recommendations
Parent coaching
Skill development
Behaviour support
Ongoing collaboration with your family
The biggest difference is that Behaviour Analysts in Ontario are now regulated by a provincial college, adding another layer of public protection and professional accountability.
What Credentials Should You Look For?
When choosing an ABA provider in Ontario, look for someone who is:
✔ Registered with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO) as a Behaviour Analyst.
Many clinicians may also continue to hold their BCBA certification, which reflects additional internationally recognized credentials and ongoing professional development.
